Last-Minute Summer Adventures
Summer is slowly coming to an end, which means there’s only a few short weeks left to get the most out of sunny days, Summer Fridays, and spending time with the kids before they head back to school. If you’re looking for things to do before time is up, we’ve got you covered. Here are some ideas to check off of your list.
For the Outdoorsy-Type
Minnehaha Falls - Minneapolis
If you haven’t checked out this holy grail of waterfalls, you’re missing out. The 53-foot waterfall attracts about 850,000 visitors per year. One easy hiking trail takes you around in a 0.8-mile loop to get there.
Voyageurs National Park - International Falls
Minnesota’s one and only national park, this spot is only good for a short amount of time from now. This national park, which was established just 45 years ago, is about a four-hour drive from the Twin Cities and sits on the border of Canada. The park is mainly known for its many water channels that are popular with canoeists, kayakers, boaters, and fishermen.
For Those with Kids
Nickelodeon Universe - Mall of America
Finally, Nickelodeon Universe has opened its doors once again. The amusement park, formerly Camp Snoopy, reopened to the public on August 10 after being closed for close to six months. While this is great news, the theme park is limiting capacity to 250 people at a time for two hours at a time. However, riders can enjoy an unlimited amount of rides and other attractions during that time. Tickets start at $19.99 per rider and $4.99 for nonrides, and guests ages 3 and up are just required to wear face masks in the park, including when they are on the rides.
Minnesota Zoo - Apple Valley
Before Nickelodeon Universe decided to open its doors again, the animals at the Minnesota Zoo, on the other hand, welcomed guests back on July 24. Like the MOA theme park, guests ages 3 years or older will be required to wear masks. Zoo-goers also need to reserve their spot online in advance.
For the Music & Movie Lovers
Vali-Hi Drive-In - Lake Elmo
Vali-Hi is a longtime classic and usually closes for the season once the weather turns in fall. Right now, their double feature runs every day for a week before it's switched out. Charcoal grilling is allowed, but you can't beat their $1 hot dogs. The show officially starts at dusk and play regardless of the weather. Make sure to bring your wallet; it’s cash only!
Music in the Parks - Multiple Locations
Swing, Folk, Rock, Bluegrass, Classical, and much more. The MPRB summer concert season fills the air daily with music at five concert venues running Memorial Day through Labor Day. Locations include the Lake Harriet Band Shell, Nicollet Island Park, Father Hennepin Bluff Park, Minnehaha Park, and Bryant Square Park.
