Best New Patio: Handsome Hog

Handsome Hog has a brand-new home: Cathedral Hill. Moving just up the hill from Lowertown, the Justin-Sutherland-owned restaurant features a newly-added patio that used to be a crowded parking lot. Hurry and book your spot though; the patio books up days in advance!

Best New Plant Shop: Ergo

While this place isn’t technically new new, their location is. About six months ago, the shop sprouted on Selby Ave. in Cathedral Hill. They offer a range of simple to unique plants and handcrafted pots from local craftsmen. They even have floral virtual & in-person workshops. Just bring yourself while they provide everything else, including wine and appetizers.

Best New Ice Cream: 2 Scoops Ice Cream Eatery

2 Scoops Eatery, located on Selby Avenue, is a new Black-owned ice cream shop, owned by Brian White Jr., and his parents, Brian White Sr. and Rdella White. 2 Scoops has made its home in the original Golden Thyme Coffee Shop space and ever since they opened the doors on May 30, the newly renovated space, welcoming atmosphere, and community-driven focus has attracted people from all over the state. Guests can choose from 18 ice cream flavors, a variety of specialty desserts, and even a hot food menu.

When you visit, make sure to check out the eatery’s “Cream of the Crop” wall, which features photos of local athletes and children from the community—whenever a featured athlete visits the eatery, they are asked to sign their photo. 2 Scoops also has a fund titled “2 Scoops 4 Kids,” which is dedicated to giving free ice cream to kids in the neighborhood. You can donate to the fund during your visit.

Best New Restaurant: The Gnome Pub

While it was a sad day when the Happy Gnome closed its doors a couple months back, it was given another chance and is under new ownership. This restaurant is the second for Brian and Sarah Ingram, with the two also owning Hope Breakfast Bar in the West 7th neighborhood. Like that restaurant, a portion of the profits will be donated to the couple’s Give Hope nonprofit that’s been feeding hungry neighbors during the pandemic. What neighborhood regulars loved about the old spot were the extensive beer list and chill vibes. Both are intact, but the restaurant space and adjoining patio have gotten major upgrades. The upper level of the restaurant includes a game room, second bar, and a lounge area. It will be open to the public, but can also be utilized as a private event space.
