3 Simple New Year’s Resolutions for Self Care
New year, new me, am I right? A new decade is upon us, and the phrase “treat yo’ self” is becoming more than just a mani/pedi and a shopping spree. Managing your mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social health should be high on anyone’s list of priorities. Need help getting started? SALT’s got you covered. Here are ways to get your mind, body, and soul into self-care mode starting in 2020.
Make ‘Me Time’ a Priority
Life can get busy, so it’s important to take some time out to manage the craziness. Each week, schedule out a little bit of time devoted to yourself. Mark it as an event in your calendar or set a phone alert. Whether it’s a candle-lit bath and a glass of wine, catching a movie or a yoga session, taking a 10-minute power nap, self care is what works best for you.
Regularly Detox from Social Media
A 2017 survey from the American Psychological Association found that people who constantly check their phones—whether their social media apps, texts, or email—reported higher levels of stress. Vow to take a few hours (even a day, if you can resist) to disconnect from the cyber world.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations in the moment to engage more with the world around you. Spending too much time planning, problem-solving, daydreaming, or even thinking negatively can be draining. It can also make you more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression.
Take a moment to close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you, or try engaging scent with essential oils. You may discover a new way to center yourself that works even better than skills you've utilized before. If you need help with some more best practices, local Minnesota blogger, Doug Marshall, can help here.
